‘Constructed Landscapes’ helped me to develop and become accustomed to new techniques. At first, I was not sure about how this unit would be, as I never captured my photographs in this way. However looking back at it, this unit has helped me become more confident and to create new styles of art. It allowed me to take full creative direction and to research artists I felt connected to. Even though we started this unit at the end of my GCSE’s, I felt that this unit helped me become more independent and more inspired to take paths that I would have never usually did. It helped me become more used to refining my works and to redo a project if I did not like it. I began experimenting with the dark room, photoshop and acetate. ‘Constructed Landscapes’ also helped me to grasp what photography meant to me and it helped me find my style of art. In ‘Make Do and Mend’, I felt like I was copying artists’ styles , but with this unit I felt like I only used artists for an inspiration.
When I was introduced to this unit, I was not sure if I would like it as I thought about ‘Landscapes’ in a stereotypical view. For example, I thought about nature and a big horizon. However, after studying ‘Constructed Landscapes’, I quickly realised this was not the case. It enabled me to become comfortable with creating art outside of my comfort zone. The artists I researched in this Unit had very different art pieces and this helped me to understand that ‘Landscapes’ explores and covers more than what I had originally thought. I began by researching the artists, Binet and Tillim and I found their work to be a starting point to this unit. However, I then began researching artists like Luke Saxon, who’s work I liked as he captured mundane aspects of life in a captivating way.
As the year went on, I saw myself becoming more confident in my work and becoming more acceptable to new styles. I also began to create work through my own thoughts and ideas rather than focusing solely on an artist. Looking back, I can see progress in the work I have made, and I began to be truly happy with the work I created. With this unit, I began to experiment more and go into the dark room and turn my photographs into negatives. I also began to experiment with photoshop and manipulate photographs. During this year, I learnt a lot of new information, like everyone interprets pieces differently and the importance of developing and refining my work.
With ‘Constructed Landscapes’, I learnt a lot about trial and error and being persistent with the work that I was creating. I also learnt a lot about chance and how it always played a role in every piece. I began experimenting with new styles on photoshop and this helped me to create an exhibition of over-edited photographs. I learnt how to print on acetate. I also got used to taking more photographs in my everyday life and editing them on VSCO or PicsArt. Without me knowing, I developed a lot of skills and adapted photography into my routine without it feeling like a burden. I really liked this Unit, as it allowed me to become more aware and open minded to mundane things in life and to find purpose in the smallest things.
‘Constructed Landscapes’ means something different to everyone as we all have different experiences. During my time in photography, I feel like I have developed more and more skills and techniques and became a better photographer. I also learnt to be pleased with the work I was creating rather than finding what was ‘wrong’ with it. I felt like I have made a huge progress from year 9 to now and I became more confident and interested in this subject. I hope to look back and reflect on my work in the future as I enjoyed creating these works.
